The story of names
Long before there were religions, there were names. Parents named their children after rivers and rain, after the moon and the morning, after courage, sweetness, and light. A name was a wish spoken over a child — made from the words of the language people lived in.
Then religions formed within those cultures, and over centuries many of those ordinary words came to be worn mostly by one community. The name did not change; the sorting around it did. Most names that read as religious today began as cultural and linguistic artifacts — their religious association was usually acquired, not inherent.
That acquired label now works as a filter. A name on a resume, a rental application, or a school register can trigger a judgement about a child before the child has said a word.
We cannot make people stop judging. But we can offer parents a wider choice: names drawn from the older, larger tradition that carry no label in today's world.
How names get in
- Neutral by origin — drawn from nature, virtues, sounds, places, science, or modern coinage; not from scripture, deities, prophets, or saints.
- Neutral by perception — not already established in common use as belonging to one community. A neutral etymology is not enough if the world reads the name as belonging to one group; those we leave out, without judgement.
- Practically usable — pronounceable, dignified, and real enough to live with.
Contested cases are left out rather than argued — we would rather be a small trustworthy list than a large disputed one. Every submission is reviewed by a human before it appears.
And the review never ends. This is a community effort: if a name already listed here turns out to carry a religious or community affiliation in practice, tell us and we will remove it. The directory stays trustworthy because its readers keep it honest.
